Vantage Students Entering UBC Science

May 25, 2016

A room full of students

Vantage students can use this handy guide to select courses for UBC Science.

1. Review the courses that you successfully completed in your year at Vantage, as pre-requisites for second year.

2. Look at your specialization* (“major”) on the UBC Calendar.

Visit the UBC Calendar, scroll down, and find your specialization. Identify which courses you already have from the first-year category and which ones you will need to take this year. You will be required to take these courses first as they are often pre-requisites for courses listed in the second-year category. You need to understand how prerequisites work within your specialization. While all the required courses for each year of a specialization need to be completed, some may be deferred to the next year if they are not a prerequisite. Make a list of the courses that you will need to take this year. *You will receive an email when the results of your specialization application are available on Workday.

If you are continuing with 1st year class standing, you can look at your intended specialization(s) and use this information to make informed choices.

3. Find the courses that you need to take on the Course Schedule and start creating some worklists.

You will need to shuffle courses and labs around until you find a way to fit everything. Aim to fit 4 – 5 courses in each term. Check out the Course Schedule.

4. Familiarize yourself with BSc requirements.

Look at the Faculty of Science requirements and review the worklists that you have created to ensure that they meet the criteria for you to be promoted to Year 3 in May of next year.

5. On or after your assigned registration date and time, you can return to your worklist and select “register all”.

We recommend that you register as soon as possible once your registration opens. You should register for both winter session terms. If you find that some courses that you had previously selected are already full, you can look for other sections of the same course that may still have space available. This may mean that you will need to change the sections of other courses you enroll in so that your schedule works. Read tips to help you secure a seat in a full class.

6. Questions? Speak with a Science advisor.

Beth Dennis, your academic advisor at Vantage, will continue to be your academic advisor for the Faculty of Science. You may also talk to Science Advising for academic questions. Science Advisors can be very busy during registration when many students are also selecting their courses, so please ask your questions as soon as possible!
