Get Into Research

Students discussing in a lab

November 26, 2025

5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free - Registration Required

Learn about undergrad research at UBC and visit active labs on campus.

Thinking about getting involved in research? Whether you're keen to get some experience, or you're passionate that your future career is in research, join SCI Team for an interactive dive into undergrad research in the Faculty of Science.

Learn from keynote speaker, UBC prof and researcher Dr. Alannah Hallas, about her lab and research. She'll share her experience working with teams in the lab, including undergrad and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows (post-docs), and principal investigators (lead researcher).

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Hallas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Before coming to UBC, she completed her PhD in Physics at McMaster University and her postdoctoral fellowship at Rice University. She is a recipient of the Sloan Research Fellowship (2023–2025), 2024 UBC Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship, 2023 Killam Teaching Prize, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Early Career Scientist Prize in Magnetism. She also serves as Co-Director of The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's Quantum Materials Program.

You'll then join smaller groups to venture out into UBC labs to meet with a researcher, and get an idea of what it's like to be in a research facility.

Note: Registration for this event is limited due to lab capacity and spots are highly sought-after. Please only register if you plan to prioritize your time to attend. In the event that you register and something unanticipated comes up (e.g., illness), please let us know as soon as possible by replying to your registration email so that we can release the spot to another student.
