Science researchers nab UBC’s premier awards

Dr. Andrea Damascelli and Dr. Marie Auger-Méthé

Material scientist Dr. Andrea Damascelli and statistical ecologist Dr. Marie Auger-Méthé have earned two of UBC’s top research honours—the Jacob Biely Research Prize and the Charles A Mcdowell Award for Excellence in Research, respectively.

Dr. Damascelli, a leading expert in condensed matter physics, uses spectroscopic techniques to study the low-energy electronic structure of solids. He specializes in quantum materials – systems that show new electronic properties that defy our ability to understand or predict them. The Jacob Biely Research Prize is the University’s premier award for research. Dr. Damascelli is a professor with UBC Physics and Astronomy, and scientific director of Blusson Quantum Matter Institute.

Working at the intersection of ecology, statistics and marine sciences, Dr. Auger-Méthé’s recent focus has been on developing and applying statistical models to understand the movement and space use of marine species. The Charles A Mcdowell Award recognizes demonstrated excellence in pure or applied scientific research by a young faculty member at UBC. Dr. Auger-Méthé is an associate professor at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and UBC Statistics.

Researchers in Mathematics, Zoology, Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Computer Science and at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability also garnered awards.
