If you have been placed into a BSc specialization and are preparing for course registration, this information is for you.
After you are placed into a BSc specialization
After you are placed into a specialization, you will be Early Registered into some of the specific named Science courses in Year 2 of your degree plan. This is called Early Registration for Specialization Admission Year.
You will be responsible for making adjustments to your schedule as needed. It is not possible to change your Early Registered courses before your registration appointment opens. It is only during and after your registration appointment when you can add any additional Science or non-Science courses to complete your timetable.
Note that if you have not completed a required pre-requisite, you will not be registered in the course for which that pre-requisite is required.
Exceptions
Due to the nature of some programs, students in the following specializations are not eligible for Early Registration for Specialization Admission Year:
- Major in Integrated Sciences
- Combined Major in Science
- Major in Geographical Sciences
Preparing your saved schedule(s) in Workday
In preparation for registration, you are probably creating one or more saved schedules in Workday for when your registration appointment opens. It is possible that the course(s) you were registered in through Early Registration for Specialization Admission Year may have conflicts with the courses in your saved schedule. Be sure to resolve all conflicts before your registration appointment opens.
For example, if CPSC_V 210 is one of the courses you are Early Registered in, you need to remove CPSC_V 210 from your saved schedule because you are already registered. Or, if the time of the section does not work for you, you will need to make adjustments yourself in Workday. Refer to this guide on dropping or swapping course sections.
Please be mindful when dropping and/or swapping course sections. If you drop a section and decide to add it back or register for another section of the same course, a seat may or may not still be available.
Once your saved schedule is free of alerts/error messages, you can then register for courses from your saved schedule when your registration appointment opens. Do this for both Term 1 and Term 2 because you must register for each term individually in Workday.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get to pick the day/time and a particular instructor for specific named courses?
No. If you want to adjust your registration, you can make changes (swap sections or add/drop courses) on your own in Workday after your registration appointment opens.
Will I be registered in all of my required 200-level courses?
The number of specific named courses you will be Early Registered into depends on your specialization and whether you have taken the pre-requisite courses or not.
Why was I registered in a different number of courses from another person entering the same specialization?
Early Registration for Specialization Admission Year will not place students into courses for which they do not have the pre-requisite, including standing deferred status. Additionally, some transfer students may need to work with the offering department to register into a course.
