A UBC oceanographer with a focus on climate a change and a chemist whose findings have assisted in new technologies research have been elected to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Roman Krems is a chemist and professor in UBC’s Chemistry department. Krems has developed the numerical tools for calculating the collision properties of molecules in electromagnetic fields. His work has helped to lay a foundation for new research directions aimed at quantum technologies based on controlled ensembles of molecules at extremely low temperatures.

Philippe D. Tortell is an oceanographer and professor in the Departments of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Botany. His work helps us understand the effects of gasses such as carbon dioxide on the quickly changing Arctic and Antarctic marine systems. He serves as the Director of the Peter Wall Institute.

The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. All Members of the College have demonstrated a high level of achievement at an early stage in their career.
