Two New Canada Research Chairs in Science, Six Renewed

UBC Science builds on and expands its research excellence with the appointment of two new Canada Research Chairs and the renewal of six previously appointed Chairs.

Ken Harder, CRC in Host-Pathogen Immunogenetics, and Assist. Prof. in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, explores how genetics control the way our innate and adaptive immune systems develop and work. Based on rodent studies of cancer and infection, this research will help identify causes of inappropriate immune responses and enhance resistance to pathogens and tumours.

Christian Schoof

Christian Schoof, CRC in Global Process Modelling, and Assist. Prof. in the Department of Earth & Ocean Sciences, explores polar climate and geophysical events such as fast flowing ice streams. This research will help predict how climate change will impact sea levels in Greenland and Antarctica.

The six CRC renewals in Science include Brett Gladman, CRC in Planetary Astronomy; Robert Hancock, CRC in Pathogenomics and Antimicrobials; Rachel Kuske, CRC in Applied Mathematics; Dolph Schluter, CRC in Evolutionary Biology; Mark Van Raamsdonk, CRC in String Theory; and Amanda Vincent, CRC in Marine Conservation. These positions are among 126 federally funded CRCs, representing a total investment of $109.5 million distributed to universities, research institutes and hospitals across Canada this week.
