Fisheries, IRES and Applied Math Units Join UBC Science

UBC Science is pleased to welcome three interdisciplinary research units to the Faculty: UBC's Fisheries Centre, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and Institute for Applied Mathematics.

The change of administrative home is effective April 1, 2012.

The move is part of an effort to integrate and extend the support for interdisciplinary groups across UBC, and adds a strong cluster of sustainability- and policy-oriented research streams to the Faculty’s portfolio. All three units were previously housed in UBC's College for Interdisciplinary Studies.

The Fisheries Centre promotes the multidisciplinary study of aquatic ecosystems and broad-based collaboration with maritime communities, government, NGOs and other partners. Its research spans fisheries economics, aquatic ecosystem modeling, marine mammal research and work in aboriginal fisheries conservation.

The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) is a problem-focused and curiosity-driven interdisciplinary research institute, and hosts an affiliated graduate program in resource management. IRES focuses on sustainable futures through integrated research and exploring the linkages between human and natural systems.

Both the Fisheries Centre and IRES are heavily involved in the public discourse on sustainability issues, and work to support evidence-based decision making and policy development at the local, national and international levels.

Faculty, fellows and students at the Institute for Applied Mathematics conducts research in collaborative groups across fluid dynamics, mathematical biology, nonlinear dynamics, scientific computing, images and data processing, and optimization and control.
