Thinking about getting involved in research? Whether you're keen to get some experience, or you're passionate that your future career is in research, join SCI Team for an interactive dive into undergraduate research in the Faculty of Science.
This two-part event will allow you to immerse yourself in the world of research opportunities at UBC.
November 4: Pathways to Undergraduate Research
5:30 to 8:00 pm on Campus
This interactive event will feature prominent researchers from UBC Science, including upper-level undergraduate and graduate students conducting research across all disciplines. Plus, hear from Dean Mark MacLachlan who will speak at the event!
Students will leave the event having had the opportunity to...
- Gain insight into why undergraduate research matters
- Understand pathways to getting involved in undergraduate research
- Connect with current researchers and upper-year students who are actively engaging in research at UBC in roundtable discussions
Students can expect to leave this session with tangible next steps and strategies to find research opportunities at UBC.
November 18: Active Lab Tours
5:30 to 7:00 pm on Campus
In order to attend the Lab Tours on November 18, you must have attended and participated in Pathways to Undergraduate Research on November 4.
Join small groups to tour UBC labs, meet with researchers, and get an idea of what it's like to be in a research facility. You'll choose which labs you want to visit after connecting with researchers on November 4.
Note: Registration for this event is limited due to lab capacity and spots are highly sought-after. Please only register if you plan to prioritize your time to attend. In order to attend the Lab Tours on November 18, you must attend and participate in the November 4 event. In the case that you register and something unanticipated comes up (e.g., illness), please let us know as soon as possible by replying to your registration email so that we can release the spot to another student.
Showcase your Undergraduate Research at Get into Research!
We are inviting undergraduate students conducting research in on-campus labs to showcase their lab and lab work as a part of this event.
Ideally, participating labs can accommodate a small group of students for about 15 minutes at a time.
The contribution requirement from each lab member participating would be approximately 5 hours including:
- Creation of a digital slide explaining the lab and their work (template to be provided)
- One volunteer to represent the lab and engage in student discussion on Wednesday, November 4 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm (total of 2.5 hours)
- One volunteer to provide 2 to 3 lab tours, about 15 minutes each, on Wednesday, November 18 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm (total of 1.5 hours)
The Lab Tours require someone from the lab team (e.g., Grad Students, Post-Docs, Principal Investigators) who can provide evening access to the lab and speak to the research, tools, and equipment used in the research. An interactive component or demonstration would be well-received, if possible. A guidance document can be provided by SCI Team with ideas on how to structure the tour and promote student engagement. The group size for these tours will depend on the space and safety considerations of your lab. On average, previous tours included 10 to 20 participants, but SCI Team can accommodate as needed.
