Credit/D/Fail courses allow students to receive a credit, a D, or a Fail grading instead of a percentage grade. In the Faculty of Science, students must use percentage grading for the Lower-level Requirements, the Communication requirement, Science Breadth and any course required for a specialization (including minors).
Students must make a request for a course to be assigned a Credit/D/Fail grading.
You are not able to change your course to Credit/D/Fail on your own in Workday—you must request a Credit/D/Fail grading through Science Advising (and you must already be registered in the course).
How do I request a Credit/D/Fail grading?
- Review UBC policy on Credit/D/Fail in the Academic Calendar
- Find the Credit/D/Fail course on Workday
- Register in the course (waitlists are not accepted)
- Submit your Credit/D/Fail request form to Science Advising by the deadline (one course per form)
When can I make a request?
The Credit/D/Fail application form opens:
- Winter session: For term one, as soon as course registration is open. For term two, the form opens on November 15.
- Summer session: Once course registration is open.
You cannot make a request after the add/drop deadline. Carefully consider your request, as requests for reversal will only be considered by appeal.
How do I know if my request is approved?
Monitor your Workday registration page. In general, requests will be reviewed within two weeks of the add/drop deadline. You will not get a notification email for approved requests.
How do I know if my request is denied?
You will get an email from Science Advising if your request was denied. Note that if your request is denied after the drop deadline and you wish to remove yourself from the course, your option is to withdraw (with a W for the course).
Why might my request be denied?
You are still expected to be aware of the policies for Credit/D/Fail courses applying to degree requirements. For example, the course may not be eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading, or you may have reached the maximum number of Credit/D/Fail credits you can apply towards your degree.
