Sciencewatch.com has ranked the University of British Columbia as having the highest journal publishing impact factor in the field of computer science in Canada.
An impact factor measures the number of citations garnered by journal articles, and is frequently used to gauge the importance of published research, or an entire journal. The website's ranking is based on an analysis on the average citations per paper among Canadian universities that published 50 or more papers in computer science and engineering journals between 2003 and 2007.
In that time, UBC published 137 papers, and garnered 2.89 citations per paper. That citation rate narrowly beat out the University of Toronto, with 2.82 citations per paper over the period.
The University of Western Ontario, McGill University and Carleton University rounded out the top five. The ranking uses the Thomson Reuters-indexed journals of computer science and engineering.
