Three New Leaders Arrive at UBC Science this Summer

Anne Condon was appointed Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. She is professor in Computer Science and her research focuses on computational complexity theory and biomolecular computation. Prof. Condon holds the NSERC/General Motors Chair for Women in Science and Engineering. As leader of the Jade Project she works towards increasing the representation and success of women in the physical sciences and engineering in BC and the Yukon.

Nimal Rajapakse was appointed Director of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS). He served as the Head of the Mechanical Engineering department in the Faculty of Applied Science from 2000 to 2007. His research interests lie in computational mechanics and modeling of advanced materials. Prof. Rajapakse succeeds Rabab Ward who had served for more than ten years as director of ICICS.

Rachel Kuske was appointed head of the department of Mathematics. She came to UBC in 2003 and has been appointed a Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics. Her research focus is to develop mathematical models that are used to analyze and solve applied problems and industrial procedures. Prof. Kuske has led the recently completed assessment of the working climate for UBC Science faculty. She succeeds Brian Marcus who had served for five years as head of the department.
