Mathematician, chemist receive UBC’s top research prizes

UBC has announced its Faculty Research Awards.

Joel Feldman, one of Canada’s best known mathematical physicists, has received UBC’s Jacob Biely Faculty Research Prize for his work in constructive quantum field theory and the mathematical theory of Fermi liquids. The prize recognizes the University’s top researcher.

The Charles A McDowell Award, which recognizes UBC’s most promising young scientific researchers, went to chemist Roman Krems.

Krem’s lab investigates the effects of electromagnetic fields on the dynamics of molecules at low temperatures, the interaction properties of cold and ultracold molecules, ultracold chemistry and many-body dynamics of molecules in optical lattices.

Four additional UBC Science faculty members received Killam research fellowships:

2014 UBC Killam Research Fellowships

  • Steven Hallam (Microbiology and Immunology)
  • Patrick Martone (Botany)
  • Parisa Mehrkhodavandi (Chemistry)
  • Brett Gladman (Physics and Astronomy)

UBC Science alum Jennifer Gardy (currently with the School of Population and Public Health) was awarded the President’s Award for Public Education through Media.

UBC's Faculty Research Awards are peer nominated. Winners are selected by UBC’s faculty research award committee, which spans arts and humanities, business, education, applied science, science and medicine.

An award reception will be held on Tuesday March 31, 2015 in the Glass Lobby of the Chan Centre.
