George Sawatzky Honoured by Royal Society of Canada

The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada has awarded the Henry Marshall Tory Medal to George Sawatzky, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Physics and Chemistry of Nanostructured Materials at UBC.

From RSC’s laudation: "George Sawatzky is a world-leading expert on the electronic structure of correlated electron materials and has established electron spectroscopy as a major tool in this area of science. His brilliant ideas have inspired experimentalists around the world in their development of an array of spectroscopic tools using synchrotron radiation, such as resonant X-ray scattering, X-ray circular dichroism, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering."

Sawatzky, professor in both the departments of Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy, received the Medal in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, November 17th at the RSC’s Annual Banquet.

His brilliant ideas have inspired experimentalists around the world in their development of an array of spectroscopic tools.
