Be inspired by outstanding UBC Science alumni who have contributed to UBC and enriched the lives of others.

Created in 2017 as part of the 100th year of alumni UBC, the Alumni Builder Awards recognize a cross-section of alumni who have significantly contributed to the university and enriched the lives of others, and in doing so, have supported alumni UBC’s vision of a global alumni community for an exceptional UBC and a better world. We are proud to recognize the many Alumni Builder Award recipients who are graduates from the Faculty of Science.

2024-2025

Barry Price, BSc’65, MSc’72

Barry Price has demonstrated an enduring commitment to supporting enriched earth sciences education and fostering opportunities for future generations of mining professionals. A key advocate for the revitalization of the UBC Teck Geological Field Station, he championed the project from inception to completion, and his efforts helped to establish a lasting legacy. His academic roots and fond memories of UBC student life in the ‘60s and ’70s influenced his successful career as a geologist in the resource sector. Even into his retirement, those experiences continue to sustain his unwavering enthusiasm for his alma mater.

2023-2024

David Ng, BSc’92, PhD’98

Professor, scientist, science educator, communicator, and alum, Dr. David Ng stands out for his significant contributions in bridging the arts and sciences. His enthusiasm and multidisciplinary style of education have had a lasting impact on UBC Science and the Michael Smith laboratories. His approach also integrates equity, diversity, and inclusion. In addition to collaborating with unrepresented communities, he raises awareness on pressing issues such as Indigenous engagement, gender equality in the field of STEM, climate change, and sustainability. By making the arts and sciences accessible and relevant to diverse audiences, his initiatives and leadership both educate and inspire change.

Miguel Romero, PhD’90

Dr. Miguel A. Romero’s advocacy and philanthropic contributions to the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science have supported subsequent generations of aspiring chemists and research excellence. Now retired from a prominent career in organic chemistry, Dr. Romero has endeavoured to teach lifelong lessons in determination, kindness, creativity, and community connection.

Lana Sutherland, BSc’93

Honouring Lana Sutherland and Garret Chan for their commitment and passion for environmental stewardship and sustainability, and for contributions to the Faculty of Science and UBC Botanical Garden. Together, this team provides innovative and collaborative leadership towards research in biodiversity and the protection, conservation, and enhancement of healthy ecosystems around the world.

Garrett Chan, BSc’90

Honouring Lana Sutherland and Garret Chan for their commitment and passion for environmental stewardship and sustainability, and for contributions to the Faculty of Science and UBC Botanical Garden. Together, this team provides innovative and collaborative leadership towards research in biodiversity and the protection, conservation, and enhancement of healthy ecosystems around the world.

Andrew Davies, BSc’94

In recognition for the value of his contributions to the UBC Earth Sciences Community and for his passionate advocacy for geoscience education in British Columbia.

Peter Smith, PhD’98

For his long record of volunteerism with the Department of Computer Science and for his continuous advocacy and support of fostering connections and opportunities for intellectual growth within the CS alumni community.
