Science Student Leader: Mina

Mina (she/her) shares her experience as a Transfer Orientation leader, helping new transfer students feel welcome. Outside of her role, she enjoys playing golf and tennis.

What did you learn as an Orientation Leader that you'll carry with you beyond your role? 

Being an Orientation Leader taught me how important it is to create a welcoming space where people feel comfortable asking questions and being themselves. I learned that even small gestures and acts of encouragement or kindness, such as remembering someone's name or checking in with them, can make a huge difference in making them feel welcomed. The lessons I learned about empathy, leadership, and fostering community are ones I'll carry with me far beyond this role. 

What was your favourite part about being an Orientation Leader? 

I love watching the nervous energy in the morning of Imagine Day turn into laughter, high-fives, and new friendships by the afternoon. Seeing students light up as they find their place on campus makes every moment worth it. Being part of that excitement was the highlight of my Orientation Leader experience. 

How did you feel that your leadership made an impact? 

Being approachable and supportive helped new students feel more at ease during their first day at UBC. Many students have questions about classes, campus life, or just navigating the transition, and it was meaningful to be someone they could talk to. Knowing that I helped make their experience a little less overwhelming made the role very rewarding. 

What pleasantly surprised you about the Orientation Leader experience?

What pleasantly surprised me most was the strong sense of community among the Orientation Leaders themselves. While I expected to help new students build connections, I didn't anticipate how many meaningful friendships and supportive relationships I would form with other leaders. The experience created a welcoming and collaborative environment that made it just as rewarding for us as it was for the students we were supporting.
