Dear UBC Science (BSc and BCS students),

We are writing today to provide an update in regards to the remainder of the term one final exam period. We have been watching the situation with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 closely, and have heard from many of you who have expressed concerns. We have been meeting regularly with stakeholders at the University as well as within the Faculty of Science on this topic.

Final exams are scheduled to continue through Wednesday December 22, and we expect some Science courses may change to an online final exam. Please do not reach out to your instructor to ask. If there is a decision to move a final exam online, your instructor will inform you through official channels including email (check your junk folders) and other platforms like Canvas. Monitor the places where you regularly hear from your instructor so that you have the most up-to-date information. If you do not hear anything, plan to write the final exam in the mode outlined in your course syllabus.

If your exam is to be held in-person, UBC continues to have building and safety measures in place: facilities.ubc.ca/covid-19/building-ventilation-safety-measures/. Now more than ever, our expectation is that you will strictly follow the COVID-19 Campus Rules: srs.ubc.ca/covid-19/ubc-campus-rules-guidance-documents/ including proper hand washing, wearing your best-fitting mask, and ensuring that you do not attend an exam if you are unwell.

If you do not feel comfortable attending your remaining final exams due to concerns related to the Omicron variant, you may request to delay your exam through what is known as “Deferred Standing” or SD.  Normally, Deferred Standing is available for students facing an unforeseen circumstance such as an illness; we appreciate the unusual circumstances and therefore we are making a temporary exception to our SD policies.

All deferred standing requests received for exams scheduled Sunday December 19 from 8 am through Wednesday December 22 will be automatically approved. This measure is not retroactive for exams outside of this time period.

Deferred standing examinations are held at the next available sitting - potentially January, April, June or July 2022, depending on the course. The current schedule of January SD exams can be found at: science.ubc.ca/students/blog/january-2022-deferred-examination-schedule.
To apply for deferred standing online visit: science.ubc.ca/students/advising/concession/deferredstanding

Science Advising is open for drop-in through Friday Dec 24 at 12 noon. If you need to speak with an academic advisor, find our hours and contact details: science.ubc.ca/students/advising

We know that this option is not a perfect solution for all students, and that this exam season has been particularly stressful for many. We hope this gives you an opportunity to determine what works best for your personal circumstances and make an informed choice about your next steps. We know that you are continuing to work hard in your academics as we navigate this pandemic together.

For those of you with remaining exams during this final exam period, we continue to send you our best wishes for productive studying and don’t forget that a critical element to your success is getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and eating well.
