Mineral Deposit Research Unit

Supporting collaborations to advance mineral research, discovery and exploration.

Devoted to increasing the understanding of mineral deposits and mineral exploration, the Mineral Deposit Research Unit (MDRU) is a collaborative venture between the minerals industry and UBC Science. Established in 1989, with the financial investment by the minerals industry headquartered in Vancouver, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), MDRU has become an important part of UBC’s Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and an internationally recognized research group. It is part of an integrated geologic and geophysical research program at UBC devoted to training students for employment in the industry and to solving research questions of interest to the community.

MDRU and associated faculty in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences have established themselves as one of the best economic geologic research centre in Canada. It supports effective collaboration between industry professionals and academics conducting cutting-edge research. Research programs conducted on a global scale, with graduate students and senior researchers active in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Perú, Argentina, Tanzania, Turkey, Mongolia, and Australia, with expanding opportunities in Asia and Africa.

The high level of cooperation established with the minerals community is an essential ingredient behind MDRU’s on-going success. Continued support from industry partners, allows MDRU to meet the ever-increasing challenges of mineral exploration and develops innovative discovery techniques and models for industry application. MDRU is able to continue its mandate through contributions from industry partners to both research projects and the MDRU Endowment Fund.
