Ways to Give
There are many ways to invest in UBC Science.
For more information about any of the ways of giving listed below, or to discuss an opportunity or program you'd like to help establish, please do not hesitate to contact the Science development team.
Gifts of Cash
UBC welcomes gifts of cash of any value or in currency. If you choose to donate a gift of cash, you’ll receive a donation receipt for the full amount of your gift.
Gifts of Securities
UBC is happy to accept donations of securities or shares. Publicly traded securities include shares, bonds and mutual funds. Donating publicly traded securities directly to UBC--rather than donating the cash proceeds from their sale--creates substantial tax savings.
In the May 2, 2006 federal budget, the government eliminated the capital gains tax on donations of securities or shares. This means even more tax savings for donors. UBC can accept both electronic and certificate shares, as well as gifts of publicly traded options. If you choose this gift type, you will receive a donation receipt for the value of the gift.
Give Online
You may donate online with your credit card via UBC's secure Online Gift Centre. You can sign up for a monthly giving program, make a one-time gift, or pay an existing pledge online.

Planned Gifts
With a little planning, your gift to UBC Science can advance your financial, philanthropic and estate-planning goals. Planned gifts give back, allowing you to take advantage of sizeable income, capital gains, and estate deductions on your taxes. They can provide income for you and your family for life. And planned gifts can be much larger than other gifts, so you can leave a legacy that fits your philanthropic goals.
Planned giving is a charitable donation that is deferred into the future or to the time of one’s passing. They have unique tax implications and we would be pleased to work with you to ensure your best interests are considered when creating a gift. The following are examples of planned giving opportunities:
- Charitable remainder trusts
- Bequests and wills
- Insurance policies
- Gift plus annuity plans
Gifts-in-Kind
A gift-in-kind is a non-cash donation and includes items such as personal effects, artwork and real estate. Applied Science welcomes any gifts-in-kind for which it has a use. Tax receipts for the fair market price are issued once the gift has been appraised.
International Gifts
The University of British Columbia has established international charitable foundations for donors living in the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. These foundations help non-residents of Canada support UBC Science, while still maximizing tax benefits in the donor’s country of residence. Gifts made to UBC foundations flow directly to the University and are used exactly as directed. No administration fees of any kind are deducted from your charitable gift.
