Helping to mentor, recruit and retain Aboriginal science students.
Our Aboriginal communities are among Canada’s greatest untapped human resources, and represent the single fastest growing segment of Canadian-born individuals. Yet only four of 10 Aboriginal youth in the Greater Vancouver Regional District graduate from high school, and of those who graduate, fewer than 20 per cent go on to university. UBC Science is taking proactive steps to rectify this imbalance by establishing the Aboriginal Science Initiative in partnership with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
UBC is committed to recruiting and retaining Aboriginal science students, and to providing the support they need to succeed in their academic endeavours. It is committed to providing an open and accessible environment for the students and strives to ensure all eligible Aboriginal students have the opportunity to undertake studies in UBC Science.
To realize this vision, UBC Science supports a wide array of programs to mentor and inspire Aboriginal youth:
- Math workshops held after school at secondary and primary schools
- After-school math workshops at the Musqueam Reserve
- Summer math day camps at Britannia Secondary School
- Cross–cultural education through day camps held at UBC
- Environmental fisheries Roadshow outreach
