English and the LPI

The Language Proficiency Index (LPI) is designed to provide information about an individual's competency in English. The test consists of four parts: identifying errors in sentence structure, identifying errors in English usage, evaluating or summarizing short prose passages, and writing an argumentative essay. The exam lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Writing Centre

The UBC Writing Centre offers numerous free writing programs, including a tutorial clinic (for writing and grammar questions and help on preparing for the LPI), an online writer's workshop, and programs on various other writing topics (including basic essay writing) offered in the Chapman Learning Commons. If you are interested in getting more in-depth practice for the LPI you can take one of the Writing Centre's non-credit courses, which focus on grammar and composition. If you would like to purchase study guides for the LPI, see the LPI website.
