International Students

One of the features that makes UBC such a vibrant place to study is our diverse student body. UBC has almost 4,000 international students from over 120 different countries. Roughly 400 are undergraduates with UBC Science.

Work Options and Permits for International Students

On-Campus Work

International students can work on campus as soon as they wish--you don’t need a work permit. You do need to be in full-time studies and have a study permit valid for more than six months. It’s normal for UBC employers to restrict hours to 10 to 12 hours a week in order not to take too much time away from your studies.

Social Insurance Number

You’ll need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in order to be paid. You can apply for a SIN for free at a Service Canada office.

Work Learn Program

Work Learn is an experiential work program for international undergraduate students seeking work on campus. It allows international students to gain valuable work and research experience in their field.

Off-Campus Work Permit

International students in a degree, diploma or certificate program who are registered for 9 credits per term are eligible to apply for an off-campus work permit after 6 months of studies. If you start your studies in September, you can apply for an off-campus permit in March. Transfer students who attended another post-secondary in the last 12 months may include those months as part of their eligibility. Students must be in satisfactory academic standing to be considered.

Co-op Work Permit

If you’re an international student enrolled in co-op you need a work permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. There is no application fee. A co-op work permit is different from an off-campus work permit, but you may hold both if you meet the criteria for each.

Post-Graduation Work Permit

Once you’re notified that you’ve met all your program and faculty requirements for graduation, you’re eligible to apply for a post-graduation permit that allows you to work in Canada for up to three years. You must apply within 90 days of receiving graduation confirmation, and your study permit must still be valid. You don’t need to have a job offer or employment in your field of study to apply for a permit. If you want to work while your post-graduation work permit is being processed, you’ll need to have applied for an off-campus work permit before graduation—it allows you to work legally for 90 days after graduation.
