Research and Field Experiences

Many students are hands-on learners, and are eager to apply what they study in the classroom. So explore your options in undergraduate research and fieldwork--it's never too early to start.

Do Research to Get a Research Position

You can do a lot on your own to find research opportunities. Your lab TAs already have a BSc and are working on an advanced degree. Talk to them--they can connect you to labs, other graduate students and post-docs. Your instructors are another good resource. Visit departmental pages and read about current research projects. You’ll be surprised at what captures your interest and how much you can understand. Prepare a few questions and arrange to talk to the professor during office hours. Don’t immediately hand over a resumé as though a job is available--you need to explore and learn, but your interests might eventually translate into a volunteer or even a paid position.

Directed Studies and Honours Thesis Courses

Many specializations offer senior students a credit course focussed on a mini research project. If you think that’s going to be part of your studies, prepare in first year by learning as much as you can about that research area at UBC. Attend research seminars or colloquia--check this site, events.ubc.ca and departmental sites. And pay attention to the skills you can learn in lab courses--they help build your resumé!
